What is Animal Flow and how will it benefit your workout routine?
Just when you think you’ve tried every exercise class out there, another one pops up. Animal Flow is a new workout designed to target every muscle in your body using just your bodyweight. There’s no need to head to the gym to get your animal flow on, though there might be classes available near to you.
This fun workout is provided by trained instructors through certified videos and gym classes to help bring fun back into your workout routine. It’s an exercise movement for everyone, though some practice will be required before you start flowing around the floor.
What is Animal Flow?
Developed and founded in Miami by Florida’s own Mike Fitch, Animal Flow uses fluid, quadrupedal movements, having participants move across the ground with all four limbs. You’ll feel as fierce as a lion and as fast as a crab when scuttling through movements.
Animal Flow will help you increase your endurance, power, strength, and mobility through functional movements. Each movement has origins in other well-known disciplines such as yoga, gymnastics, breakdancing, martial arts, and parkour.
The benefits of Animal Flow
Other than look really cool, how does this workout benefit you? Basically, it’s an all over, full-body workout that targets every aspect of fitness, whereas most other exercises target just one or two.
Animal Flow works to increase your movement and flexibility through functional bodyweight exercises. Participants will see greater stability and balance, stronger hands and wrists, more overall body power, and prolonged endurance, advancing skills across all parts of their lives.
In short, you’ll basically be entering Beast Mode, all day, every day of your life. You’ll be fitter, healthier, more flexible, stronger, and, well, ripped. Plus, you’ll have a lot of fun doing it – a fully functional Animal Flow is akin to a deliciously seductive, entrancing dance.
How to incorporate Animal Flow into your daily workout
There are many fun, easy ways to include Animal Flow in your daily workout.
There are complete classes available on DVD so you can do your workout at home. There are also some video clips up on YouTube, so you can try before you buy. Plus, there are trained instructors all over the world so you might be lucky enough to grab a class at your local gym.
Including Animal Flow in your workout rotation doesn’t have to be a full class; you can simply start adding in movements and components during other workouts. There are plenty of videos out there of fitness professionals adding an Animal Flow element to their kettlebell or yoga workout.
Who can Animal Flow?
Simply put: Animal Flow is for everyone.
While it’s an incredibly intense workout, if you’re a beginner, you’ll find your muscles and body adapting and learning at an increased pace. All the movements and positions can be broken down to basics and then stacked up and increased as the beginner (or learner) is ready to move on.
Animal Flow is especially good for weightlifters, bodybuilders, and other strength training disciplines. It’s also perfect to include in your running routine to help build the muscles needed to sustain a long run. And for the yogis in the house, Animal Flow can help build the strength and power that yoga doesn’t.
The six components of Animal Flow
Animal Flow is designed around six principles that can be combined anyway to create the best workout for you.
Starting with Wrist Mobilizations to build strength and flexibility, essential for any workout where you’re putting a lot of weight on your hands. If you’ve ever done a lot of downward dogs and planks, you’ll know the wrist ache we’re talking about here.
Activation is next. This is the holding poses you need to know in order to be able to Animal Flow. These static holds are Crab, Beast, and Limb Lifts. Without a solid foundation, you can’t really move forward with the workout.
Form Specific Stretches get deeper into an activation hold to stretch your entire body through a wide range of motion, increasing mobility and flexibility. Forms include Crab Reach, Ape Reach, and Beast Reach.
The full body conditioning Traveling Forms take your body through a series of animal-like movements. These improve the function of the “human animal” and mimic an Ape, Beast, and Crab.
Switches are essential elements of Animal Flow and are the movements needed to go from one position to the next. You can use a switch to practice drill an Activation or Form Specific Stretch or use them to transform from one position to another.
Finally, getting into Flow is where the beast magic truly starts. You can create your own Flow or follow a choreographed one to test and strengthen every muscle in your body. Create and Flow through all the Activations, Form Specific Stretches, Traveling Forms, and Switches to truly move like a majestic animal.
